The Eduscope Framework for Child Development is based around eight key competencies, or 'building blocks' which are required for effective whole child development.

The eight building blocks are as follows:
- Comprehension
- Communication
- Numerical awareness
- Logic, problem solving and reasoning
- Creativity
- Physical skills
- Empathy
- Relationship building
In addition, we have identified a number of 'synergists' that work together to promote effective development in each of these eight areas. The major synergists are:
- A language and communication rich environment
- Involvement of key adults who are advocates for learning
- Modelling of 'learning friendly' behaviours in the home
- Collaboration in the learning journey
- A sense of belonging
- A sense of wonder and curiosity about the learning process
- Self esteem and confidence in own ability
- Choice and empowerment in the learning process
- Adults that believe learning can take place at any time
- A balance of high and low intensity learning with enough time to relax
- Multi sensory experiences, including those which take place in natural environments
- Good general health and wellbeing
Many of these synergists act on a parent/carer as well as a child level - for example it is helpful if the parent has a sense of curiosity about the learning process.
